FAQ

These answers are intended to help you choose, use, and care for your knife. Every Rucker Knife is built to be used, maintained, and eventually passed down.

Company

What makes Rucker Knives different?

Rucker Knives are built by three living generations of our family.

We focus on practical designs, premium materials, and meticulous craftsmanship, not mass production. Every knife we build is designed to perform in the field, around camp, in the kitchen, or wherever dependable tools are needed. We do not build knives to sit behind glass.

That said, we understand that some knives have become more than tools. A limited edition, a custom commission, or a knife made to commemorate a milestone may become a cherished heirloom or family keepsake. Whether your knife spends its life on your belt, in your pack, or is carefully preserved for the next generation is your choice.

Our responsibility is always the same. We build every Rucker Knife without compromise, ready for a lifetime of honest work and worthy of being passed down when its work is done.

Are your knives made in the USA?

Yes. Our knives are proudly made in Montana, USA.

Who builds your knives?

Every Rucker Knife passes through the hands of our family. Three living generations work side by side designing, machining, grinding, finishing, assembling, inspecting, and sharpening the knives that bear our name. When you buy a Rucker Knife, you're buying from the people who actually built it.

Can I visit your shop?

We welcome visitors to our shop and enjoy meeting fellow knife enthusiasts. We also offer hands-on classes throughout the year for those interested in learning more about knife making and craftsmanship. Because we are a working shop, we ask that you contact us in advance to schedule your visit or reserve a spot in a class. This allows us to give you the time and attention you deserve while keeping production on track.

Our Knives

What steel do you use?

Our primary steels include CPM MagnaCut, AEB-L, and select high-carbon steels such as 15N20. We choose steel based on the job the knife was designed to do, not because it's trendy. Every steel we use has earned its place on our bench through real-world performance.

What is the difference between MagnaCut and AEB-L?

MagnaCut provides exceptional edge retention, corrosion resistance, and toughness. AEB-L is extremely tough, takes a very fine edge, sharpens easily, and excels in kitchen and hunting applications.

Are your knives full tang?

Yes. Our fixed-blade knives use full tang construction for maximum strength and durability.

What handle materials do you use?

Depending on the model, we use Richlite, stabilized woods, G10, Micarta, and other premium materials selected for durability and comfort.

Performance & Use

How sharp are your knives?

Every Rucker Knife leaves our shop shaving sharp and ready to work. We don't believe your first job should be sharpening a brand-new knife.

Can I use my knife for camping, hunting, and food preparation?

Absolutely. We design our knives to be versatile working tools.

Will the blade rust?

Even stainless steels deserve a little respect. Clean your knife after use, dry it thoroughly, and avoid storing it wet or inside a damp leather sheath. A few moments of care will keep your knife looking and performing its best for years.

How long will the edge last?

Edge life depends on steel selection and use. With normal care, most users can expect excellent edge retention before needing to touch up the edge.

Care & Maintenance

Can I put my knife in the dishwasher?

Short answer: No. Long answer: Still no. Hand wash it with warm water, dry it thoroughly, and it'll take care of you for a lifetime.

How should I sharpen my knife?

Use quality sharpening stones or guided sharpening systems. Frequent light touch-ups are better than waiting until the edge is completely dull.

Should I oil my knife?

A light coat of food-safe mineral oil is recommended for long-term storage.

How should I care for my leather sheath?

Keep it clean and dry. Occasionally apply a quality leather conditioner if the leather becomes dry.

Can I order a replacement sheath?

For many models, yes. Contact us for availability at tj@ruckerknives.com

Legacy Guarantee

What does your Legacy Guarantee cover?

A Rucker Knife is built to last for generations, and our commitment to you lasts just as long.

If your Rucker Knife is ever damaged, broken, worn, or simply needs attention, send it back to us. We'll repair it or replace it, whichever is needed to get a dependable Rucker Knife back in your hands.

We also provide complimentary lifetime sharpening for every authentic Rucker Knife. Whether your knife has seen a season of hunting, years in the kitchen, or decades of everyday carry, we'll restore its edge so it's ready for whatever comes next.

We don't believe great tools should be disposable. We build every knife to be used, trusted, and eventually passed down. Our Legacy Guarantee exists to help make sure it can.

What does the Legacy Guarantee cover?

Everything.

Whether your knife needs sharpening, repair, refurbishment, or replacement, we're here to help. Simply contact us, and we'll determine the best way to return your knife to service. Sometimes that means restoring the knife you've carried for years. Sometimes it means replacing it entirely. Either way, our goal is the same: to stand behind every Rucker Knife that bears our name.

Are there any exclusions?

No fine print. No expiration dates. No lawyer nonsense.

Our Legacy Guarantee wasn't written by a committee trying to reduce liability or maximize quarterly profits.  We don’t answer to lost world of private equity or shareholders that know nothing or care about the community we serve.  It was written by the people who build the knives. If your Rucker Knife needs help, we'll repair it or replace it. It's that simple.

The only thing we ask is that it's an authentic Rucker Knife and that you tell us the story.

The only thing we'll ask is that you tell us the story. Some of our favorite conversations begin with, "You're never going to believe what happened...".  and if you don’t have time for that, send it in anyways and we will make up a story for you.

Do you really offer free lifetime sharpening?

Yes, multiple lifetimes.  If you pass it down and it is a Rucker Knife, it is covered.

Every authentic Rucker Knife includes complimentary lifetime sharpening. We believe a knife built to last a lifetime should never become dull simply because it has been used. Send it back whenever it needs a fresh edge, and we'll sharpen it so it's ready for its next adventure.

At The Bench

Why does blade geometry matter?

Blade geometry has as much impact on cutting performance as the steel itself.

What is a full tang?

A full tang means the steel runs the full length and width of the handle, creating a stronger knife.

What is Jimping?

Jimping refers to small grooves machined into the spine to provide additional thumb traction.

Can I use my knife to pry?

We'd recommend a pry bar.

Our knives are built to work hard, but every tool has a purpose. A knife is designed to cut, not pry, twist, or act as a screwdriver. Using the right tool for the job will help both your knife and your toolbox last longer.

That said, life happens. If your Rucker Knife loses a fight with a stubborn paint can, truck door, or whatever adventure you found yourself in, send it back. Our Legacy Guarantee has you covered.

Can I baton wood with my knife?

Absolutely. Many of our fixed blade knives are designed to handle demanding outdoor tasks, including batoning wood for fire starting and camp chores.

Just use good judgment. Match the size of the knife to the job, avoid striking rocks or metal, and don't expect a small hunting knife to split a massive log. Like any good tool, using it within its intended purpose will always produce the best results.

Do you make left handed sheaths?

Yes.

Most of our leather sheaths can be built for either right or left handed carry. If you're ordering a knife, simply let us know your preference. If you already own a Rucker Knife and would like a left handed sheath, contact us and we'll discuss the available options.  And no, we will not charge you for that.  Making things right is the Rucker way.

Can I engrave my knife?

Absolutely.

Many customers choose to personalize their knife with a name, initials, military unit, badge number, meaningful date, company logo, or a short message. Personalized knives also make outstanding retirement gifts, awards, and family heirlooms.

If you're considering engraving, contact us before placing your order so we can discuss the available options.

Will my knife look exactly like the photos?

Probably not, and that's one of the things we love about building them.

Natural handle materials such as stabilized wood have unique grain patterns, colors, and figure. Even materials like Richlite, Micarta, and G10 can vary slightly from one piece to the next. Because every knife is hand finished, small variations are not only normal, they're part of what makes each Rucker Knife unique.

The knife you receive will always match the design and quality you've come to expect, but no two handcrafted knives are ever completely identical.

Why is every knife slightly different?

Because people build them.

Every Rucker Knife is finished by hand by three living generations of our family. While we work to maintain tight tolerances and consistent quality, each knife receives individual attention throughout the grinding, finishing, sharpening, and inspection process.

Those subtle differences aren't flaws. They're the signature of craftsmanship and a reminder that your knife wasn't stamped out by a machine on an assembly line. It was built by people who care about the work and stand behind every knife that bears our family name.

The Rucker Difference

Why don't you mass produce knives?

Because that's never been the goal.

We're not trying to become the biggest knife company. We're not chasing quarterly growth charts, investor presentations, or production quotas. We're building the kind of company we want to spend our lives in, alongside three living generations of our family.

That means taking the extra time. Choosing better materials. Rejecting work that doesn't meet our standards. Talking with customers. Standing behind every knife that bears our name.

Could we make more knives? Probably.

Would they still be Rucker Knives? Probably not.

We're perfectly content building fewer knives, building them exceptionally well, and sleeping just fine at night.

Plus, it gives us more time to hunt and make up more fish stories.

What does 'Built to be used' mean?

Our knives are tools made for real work and real adventures. We hope they become trusted companions that can be passed to the next generation.

Still have a question?

Give us a call, send us an email, or stop by the shop. We genuinely enjoy talking knives, hearing hunting stories, swapping recipes, and meeting the people who carry our work.

That's one of the best parts of this business.

Final Thoughts

Rucker Knives exists because three living generations of our family share a belief that some things are still worth building the right way.

We aren't trying to build the most knives. We're trying to build the knives people never want to replace.

Every knife that leaves our bench is built with the expectation that it will be used, trusted, cared for, and one day handed to someone else with a story to tell. That's why we stand behind every knife we make. It's why we offer our Legacy Guarantee. And it's why every knife bears our family name.

Whether your Rucker Knife spends its life in the field, around the campfire, in the kitchen, or becomes a treasured heirloom for the next generation, we hope it serves you well and reminds you that quality, craftsmanship, and integrity never go out of style.

Thank you for considering Rucker Knives. We look forward to being a small part of your story.
